When Is Pride Month? Dates, Origins, and Bay Area Events

Pride Month is June. It is June because the Stonewall uprising began in the early hours of 28 June 1969, when police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York, and because the first march — Christopher Street Liberation Day — was held on the anniversary, Sunday 28 June 1970. That is the whole answer to the question most people arrive here asking, and it is why so many Pride events still land on the last weekend of June.

Community

In the United States it is recognised by presidential proclamation rather than by statute. President Clinton issued the first, Proclamation 7203, on 11 June 1999. President Obama's 2009 proclamation broadened the name, and a 2022 proclamation broadened it again. The Stonewall Inn itself became a national monument on 24 June 2016, the first in the United States dedicated to LGBTQ history.

Below: the confirmed 2027 dates we can find, the Bay Area events worth knowing about, and one thing about local Pride calendars that catches people out every year.

At a glance

  • Pride Month is June, marking the Stonewall uprising that began 28 June 1969.
  • San Francisco Pride 2027 is confirmed for 26-27 June, the last full weekend of the month, which is SF Pride's stated pattern.
  • Silicon Valley Pride is the exception locally — it runs in late August, not June.
  • San Mateo County Pride has historically been the second Saturday of June, but 2027 has not been announced.

The short version, if you came here for a date

Pride Month runs the whole of June. The specific anniversary is 28 June, the date the Stonewall uprising began in 1969 and the date of the first march a year later. Individual cities hold their own events on their own weekends, which is why there is no single Pride day — the month is the anniversary, and the parades are scattered across it. San Francisco's has been on the last full weekend of June for years and 2027 is confirmed as 26-27 June.

Why June, in slightly more detail

On 28 June 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village. The raid was routine for the period; the resistance to it was not, and it ran for several nights. The following November, organisers proposed an annual demonstration on the last Saturday in June. They then moved it to the Sunday, both because they expected a bigger turnout and because it fell on the anniversary itself, and so the first march took place on Sunday 28 June 1970. That decision is the reason the last Sunday in June is still the traditional New York date and why so much of the country ended up clustering around the same weekend.

Bay Area dates

San Francisco Pride 2027 is confirmed for 26 and 27 June, the 57th annual celebration and parade. SF Pride states its event is the last full weekend in June, and 2027 fits that pattern. San Mateo County Pride is the closest to both our offices and has run on the second Saturday of June for the last two years, at Central Park in San Mateo — 14 June 2025 and 13 June 2026. Its 2027 date has not been announced, so if you are planning around it, watch the organisers rather than assume. One change worth knowing: the parade down South B Street did not run in 2026, which the Pride Center attributed to funding and permitting, so the celebration and the parade should not be treated as the same thing. Palo Alto held its first Pride event in June 2026, organised by two youth organisers, at King Plaza in front of City Hall; they have said they hope to make it annual and add a parade, but nothing is confirmed for 2027. And the one that catches people out: Silicon Valley Pride, in San Jose, is not a June event at all. It ran 29-30 August in 2026. If you are looking for a South Bay Pride in June you will not find that one there.

Why a hearing clinic has a page about this

Fair question, and the honest answer is that this page has been read a great many times by people who simply wanted a date, so the useful thing is to give them one accurately. But there is a real connection, and it is not a slogan. Healthcare avoidance is well documented among LGBTQ+ people, and hearing care is unusually easy to postpone — the average person waits years to act on hearing loss even without an extra reason. Untreated hearing loss does not hold still while you wait. So the practical version of Pride, for a clinic, is not a rainbow on a website in June. It is what happens at the front desk in November: whether your chosen name is what the reminder call uses, whether the person testing you knows why a baseline audiogram matters after decades on HIV treatment, and whether an own-voice complaint after voice training gets taken seriously or waved away at a verification screen. We have written all of that up properly on our LGBTQ+ affirming hearing care page, including the parts where the audiology evidence simply does not exist yet.

If you are due a hearing check

We are in San Mateo and San Carlos and we see patients from across the Peninsula. A hearing evaluation takes about an hour, and if you want to know what actually happens in one before you book, our hearing testing page walks through it. Call 650-342-9449 or request an appointment. Tell us anything you would like us to know beforehand — including the name you use, if it is not the one on your insurance card, so it is set up before you arrive rather than sorted out at the desk.

Frequently asked questions

Questions patients ask us

When is Pride Month?

June, every year. It marks the Stonewall uprising, which began on 28 June 1969 in New York, and the first march held on the anniversary on 28 June 1970.

When is San Francisco Pride 2027?

26 and 27 June 2027, the 57th annual celebration and parade. SF Pride holds its event on the last full weekend in June, and those dates are published on sfpride.org.

Why is Pride in June and not another month?

Because the Stonewall uprising began on 28 June 1969. Organisers chose the anniversary weekend for the first march in 1970, and the date stuck. In the United States the month is recognised by presidential proclamation rather than by law, the first having been issued in June 1999.

Is there a Pride event on the Peninsula?

San Mateo County Pride is held at Central Park in San Mateo and has run on the second Saturday of June for the last two years. The 2027 date has not been announced. Note that the parade did not run in 2026 even though the celebration did. Palo Alto held its first Pride event in June 2026 and its organisers hope to repeat it, though nothing is confirmed.

When is Silicon Valley Pride?

Late August, not June. In 2026 it ran on 29 and 30 August in San Jose. It is the local event most likely to trip people up, because everything else in the area is a June event.
